6 Pokemon Go Types You’ll Find On Holiday

If you’re one of the 75 million people who are hooked on Pokemon Go, you’ll know that the app is perfect for travel. Beaches, national parks, mountains and famous landmarks are all you need to catch those rare fire, rock or water types. Here’s where you’ll find them hiding on holiday…

Grass

Cheeky chaps like Oddish and Skiddo can be found, predictably, in forests, parks and general grassy areas. They can even be caught on golf courses, so if you’re navigating those world-famous courses in the Algarve, you’re bound to catch a few grass types along the way. For a 2-in-1 adventure holiday of a lifetime and Pokemon catching spree, you can’t go wrong with Costa Rica which is famous for its cloud forests, emerald valleys and huge national parks.

Water

Unfortunately Pokemon Go doesn’t recognise hot tubs or pools, so you won’t be able to nab some mid-swim. You will, however, find them on beaches, piers and general coastal areas. So staying in a resort that’s footsteps away from the sea is your best bet. The Azul Beach Hotel by Karisma in Mexico’s Riviera Maya is literally on the doorstep of a white-sand beach lapped by turquoise waters, so you’ll be spoilt for Krabbys, Squirtles and Horseas there. There’s also the Hotel Pernera Beach in Cyprus which is set right on a sandy cove, and ClubHotel Riu Oliva Beach Resort in Fuerteventura which sits snug next to a beach coastline that stretches out for miles and miles.

Fairy and Dragon

These mythical pocket monsters love a local landmark, and can be spotted hanging around churches and historic monuments. They also prefer sneaking about when the sun goes down, so you’re more likely to find one on your evening stroll. Italy manages to pack in loads of ancient sites, so it’s the ideal place for some sightseeing while grabbing a Swirlix or Flabébé. If you’re more keen on a far-flung Caribbean break, Jamaica happens to have more churches per square mile than any other country on earth (except the Vatican City itself), so it’s the island to be for Pokemon hunting.

Rock

You’ll find rock stars like Cranidos and Bonsly hanging out in quarries, towns, highways and large buildings – generally places that are a bit rocky (but not rocks). Shopping malls are also a great hotspot for rocky monsters if you need an excuse to stock up on those souvenirs and catch a few Onix, Rhyhorns and Gravelers on the way. When it comes to malls, you just can’t have too many shops, so our top picks for Pokemon hunts are mammoth shopping plaza Central World in Thailand, or the Mall of Emirates in Dubai which contains an opera hall, a movie theatre and an art gallery.

Fire

You don’t need to go clambering into any live volcanoes to find Charizard. But, you’ll be pleased to hear that the best places to catch fire types are in hot, dry climates and near beaches – aka all the best holiday spots. For almost year-round sun, the Canary Islands and Cape Verde are hard to beat, and they’re both home to some seriously pretty stretches of sand. So you can catch the likes of Vulpix and Ponyta while you’re sipping cocktails and relaxing on your sun lounger.
